Introduction: Every Tooth is Unique

In mass production, parts are identical. In dental manufacturing, every Crown is a unique, patient-specific medical device. . This variability makes automated inspection incredibly difficult. You cannot simply compare the product to a “master template” because the shape changes every time.

However, the quality standards are rigid. A crown is a medical device that lives in the mouth. Defects in the intaglio area (the inside surface) can cause the crown to not fit. Chipping or pitting compromises strength. White marks, glaze pooling, or orange peel ruin the aesthetic, leading to rejection by the dentist and the patient.

Eliminating manual inspection variability for such a complex, custom product requires an AI system that “understands” what a good tooth looks like, regardless of its shape.

The Challenge: Organic Shapes, Micro Defects

The project goal was to replace inconsistent manual checks with a high-speed UnitX AI Visual Inspection system at both the Glaze and End-of-Line (EOL) stations.

The Defect Matrix:

  • Structural Integrity: Identifying fractures, micro-chipping, pitting, and internal bubbles that compromise the crown’s mechanical strength.
  • Surface & Aesthetic Finish: Catching “white marks” (Zirconia-specific anomalies), glaze pooling, missing glaze, and orange-peel textures that ruin the tooth’s natural appearance.
  • Clinical Functionality: Detecting critical defects within the intaglio (internal concave) area that directly impact the crown’s seating and patient comfort.
  • Contamination Control: Flagging mixed-material contamination or foreign particulates introduced during the milling or glazing stages.

Dental crowns feature complex, organic geometries that vary with every patient.

The Solution: 360° AI-Driven Verification

To eliminate the visual blind spots inherent in custom-milled dental geometry, UnitX deployed a high-precision inspection cell powered by deep learning.

System Architecture:

  • Dual OptiX Mini Systems: Two compact, macro-optimized visual inspection systems provide high-resolution imaging of the crown’s intricate topographies.
  • Precision Multi-Axis Motion: A synchronized rotary stage and linear actuator automate the movement of every unique crown, ensuring a 360-degree visual scan with zero manual intervention.
  • CorteX AI Decision-Making: Operating at the edge, the CorteX platform identifies complex, non-repeating defects—such as glaze pooling and fractures—in real-time, ensuring absolute consistency across custom batches.

Results: Perfection Achieved

The results of this deployment were nothing short of perfect.

  • 0% Error Rate: Achieved a perfect 0% False Acceptance Rate and 0% False Rejection Rate. The system provides total containment of fractures, white marks, and intaglio flaws with zero false scrap.
  • 3.89s Average Cycle Time: High-speed multi-axis motion and AI decision-making ensure the inspection process keeps pace with modern, high-volume dental milling workflows.
  • 100% Digital Traceability: Every unique crown is logged with an objective quality record, ensuring total accountability from the initial glazing station to the final delivery at the dentist’s office.

Defect Visualization

The images below show the AI detecting Fractures (cracks) and White Marks (material inconsistency). Note how the AI highlights the defect (blue overlay) even on the glossy, curved surface of the tooth.

UnitX AI accurately identifies fractures and white marks on the unique topography of each crown.

Conclusion

Automating the inspection of custom medical devices was once thought impossible. UnitX has proven otherwise. By achieving a 0% error rate on dental crowns, we demonstrate that our AI doesn’t just memorize shapes—it understands quality. Whether it’s a molar or an incisor, we ensure it’s perfect.
