Introduction: The First Thing the Customer Sees

Before a customer sees the phone, they see the box. In the premium electronics market, packaging is part of the product. A dented corner, a tear in the shrink wrap, or a wrinkled label signals “damaged goods” before the box is even opened.

Inspecting packaging is surprisingly complex. You are dealing with multiple layers: the Color Box (cardboard/print), the Tear-Tab Label (adhesive), and the Shrink Film (transparent plastic).

Defects on transparent film—like “punctures” or “wrinkles”—are hard to see against the printed background. Scratches on the box can hide in the design. Manual inspectors struggle to check all six sides of a box at production speeds, leading to inconsistent quality on the retail shelf.

The Challenge: 25 Ways to Fail

The project goal was to automate the Six-Sided Full Inspection of mobile phone packaging.

The Massive Defect List (25 Types):
The system had to identify a huge variety of flaws across three materials:

  1. Color Box: Creases, tears, dents, color deviations, and raised/indented spots.
  2. Shrink Film: Wrinkles, punctures, scratches, and excess thickness.
  3. Tear-Tab Label: Imprint marks, blisters, and adhesive residue.

This required a vision system capable of handling high-gloss reflections from the plastic film while simultaneously reading the matte surface of the box.

Premium packaging requires inspection of the box, the shrink wrap, and the security seal.

The Solution: Enclosed 6-Sided AI Station

UnitX deployed a fully enclosed AI Station designed to inspect the package from every angle.

UnitX’s enclosed station performs 100% inspection of all six faces of the box.

UnitX’s enclosed station performs 100% inspection of all six faces of the box.

System Capabilities:

    • 360° Coverage: The system manipulates or employs multiple cameras to perform a 100% inspection of all six faces of the shrink-wrapped box.
    • Optics for Transparency: Using UnitX OptiX lighting, the system highlights defects on the clear shrink film (like tears) that would otherwise be invisible.
    • CorteX AI Processing: All multi-layer visual data is processed instantly by the CorteX AI inspection system, executing complex defect classification in real-time without slowing down the line.
    • Closed-Loop Automation: Inspection verdicts are fed back to the equipment layer instantly. Defective (NG) units are automatically segregated, ensuring only perfect boxes ever make it to the retail pallet.

Results: Upgrading the “Eye”

The automation project successfully replaced subjective manual inspection with a highly reliable, objective digital standard, delivering immediate wins across both operations and quality control.

Operational Impact: * Labor Reallocation: The system successfully took over the highly repetitive task of checking six-sided packaging, directly replacing one manual inspector per shift. This reduced direct labor costs and freed up the human operator for higher-value tasks on the factory floor.

Technical Precision:

  • High-Quality Filtration (False Acceptance Rate: ≤ 0.5%): The AI serves as an ultra-strict final gate. By catching 99.5% of all critical defects, it ensures that crushed corners, dented boxes, and torn shrink film never make it to the retail shelf.
  • Smart Efficiency (False Rejection Rate: ≤ 5%): Multi-layer packaging materials naturally vary—for example, a harmless slight waviness in the film versus an actual, damaging wrinkle. The UnitX AI successfully learned this nuanced difference, keeping the False Rejection Rate low and preventing the costly scrapping of perfectly good products.

Defect Visualization

The images below show the system’s ability to spot defects on both the box and the film.

  • “Film Tears”: Visible as jagged interruptions in the plastic reflection.
  • “Dull”: Detecting deviations in the gloss finish.
  • “Foreign Objects”: Dirt or debris trapped under the film.

UnitX AI detects subtle film tears and contamination trapped under the shrink wrap.
