Introduction: The Unboxing Experience

For a premium smartphone, the “unboxing experience” is a pivotal moment for the brand. If the customer peels off the protective film and sees a scratch on the screen, a scuff on the frame, or dust inside the camera lens, brand trust is shattered instantly.

Ensuring the perfection of a fully assembled phone is the ultimate challenge. It requires inspecting multiple materials (glass, metal, plastic) on multiple planes (front, back, edges) simultaneously.

Most manufacturers rely on armies of human inspectors for this final gate. But human fatigue, standard drift, and minute defects like “pinpoint blemishes” are missed. Our client needed an automated, objective way to verify every finished smartphone from all angles.

The Challenge: Glass, Metal, and Lenses

The project goal was comprehensive: delivering fully automated, 360-degree inspection across the Mid-frame, Camera Module, Front, and Rear surfaces.

The Defect Trifecta:
The system needed to handle three distinct inspection zones:

  1. Touch Panel (TP): Detecting scratches and pinpoint blemishes on the glossy screen.
  2. Camera Area: Identifying white-spot fibers, dot defects, and misalignment inside the lens or housing.
  3. Housing/Frame: Spotting scratches, scuffs, dents, pressure marks, “white-peel” paint exposure, and glue overflow on the metal/plastic body.

Full-assembly inspection covers the screen, camera, and mid-frame in one continuous process.

The Solution: A High-Throughput, Four-Station AI Cell

To match the rapid pace of premium smartphone manufacturing without sacrificing quality, UnitX deployed a fully automated, four-station inline inspection line designed to keep production moving.

UnitX’s 4-station line utilizes 10 OptiX to verify every surface of the smartphone.

System Power:

    • Omnidirectional Inspection (10x OptiX): The cell is powered by a network of 10 UnitX OptiX visual inspection systems. Rejecting a one-size-fits-all approach, each OptiX system utilizes a customized optical setup to instantly achieve the exact contrast and resolution needed for its target zone, eliminating the need for manual handling or re-checking.
    • Unified Orchestration (CorteX AI): The computational heavy lifting is handled by UnitX CorteX AI. Acting as the command center, it ingests and analyzes high-resolution data from all 10 stations simultaneously, delivering instant, objective pass/fail grading at production speeds.

Results: An Automated Firewall for Brand Protection

By deploying UnitX, the manufacturer automated their ultimate quality gate, securing the unboxing experience while protecting production efficiency.

  • False Acceptance Rate ≤ 0.1% (Nearly zero leakage of scratches or misaligned cameras)
  • False Rejection Rate: 3% – 5% (Optimal yield with minimal false scrap)
  • Defect Coverage: 100% of Critical Zones (Reliably detects everything from hidden TP adhesive to metal burrs)

Defect Visualization

The images below show the system’s versatility.

  • “Front Camera Misalignment”: A precise geometric check.
  • “Scuffs/Burrs”: Detecting texture anomalies on the metal frame.
  • “Screen Scratches”: Visible only under specific lighting angles.

UnitX AI identifies assembly errors like camera misalignment and subtle aesthetic defects like scuffs.

Conclusion

In the competitive smartphone market, quality is the differentiator. UnitX’s Full-Assembly Inspection line ensures that when your customer opens the box, they see exactly what you designed: perfection. Powered by 10 tailored visual inspection systems and CorteX AI intelligence, we guard your brand’s reputation—one phone at a time.
