Introduction: The Fine Line Between a View and a Leak

The UnitX inspection cell is designed to handle large automotive glass componeThe sunroof is an important exterior component that defines the visual aesthetic of a modern vehicle. However, ensuring it seals perfectly to the roof is a critical manufacturing challenge.

The integrity of a sunroof relies heavily on the application of the Primer and the Adhesive Bead. If the primer is missing, the glass won’t bond securely. If the adhesive bead has a gap, water will find its way in. Furthermore, surface flaws like paint chips or scratches can ruin the visual appeal of the vehicle’s exterior.

Manual inspection of these large glass panels is slow and prone to error. Operators struggle to consistently check meters of black adhesive against black glass, leading to fatigue and missed defects.

The Challenge: Black-on-Black Inspection

The project goal was to automate the inspection of the sunroof to meet stringent OEM quality standards.

The Technical Hurdle:
The primary defects involve the Primer and Adhesive Bead. Visually, this is often a “black-on-black” inspection challenge—detecting black primer or glue on dark glass or metal frames. Standard vision systems struggle with this low contrast.

Defect Scope:

  • Sealing Integrity: Gaps in the bead, missing primer, or inconsistent bead width.
  • Surface Quality: Scratches and chips that degrade appearance.

The customer needed a solution that could improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) by replacing the slow manual process with a high-speed automated system.

Precision inspection of the sunroof edges is required to prevent water leaks and wind noise.

The Solution: High-Speed AI Processing

UnitX deployed a dedicated inspection station powered by CorteX AI.

High-Speed AI Processing

System Approach:

  • AI Segmentation: Unlike rule-based systems that look for simple edges, the UnitX AI is trained to segment the adhesive bead and primer path. It “understands” what a good bead looks like and flags interruptions or irregularities.
  • Traceability: The system captures defect images for every sunroof, allowing the manufacturer to track quality trends over time (e.g., identifying a specific robot nozzle that is clogging).

Results: 1 Second to Verify the Seal

The automation provided the speed and reliability necessary for high-volume automotive assembly.

1. Blistering Speed

  • Cycle Time: 1 Second.
  • The system analyzes the entire perimeter of the sunroof in just one second. This is significantly faster than any manual inspection could achieve, removing the bottleneck from the glass bonding station.

2. Reliable Leak Prevention

  • False Acceptance Rate: < 1%.
  • The system ensures that sunroofs with compromised primer or adhesive paths are stopped before they are installed on the car, preventing costly water leak repairs later in the assembly process (or at the dealership).

3. Operational Efficiency

  • False Rejection Rate: ≤ 5%.
  • By maintaining a low false rejection rate, the system balances safety with yield, ensuring efficient production flow.

Conclusion

A leaking sunroof is one of the most damaging defects for a car brand’s reputation. UnitX helps manufacturers seal the deal by automating the inspection of critical primer and adhesive beads. With a 1-second cycle time, we ensure that every sunroof is water-tight and road-ready.
